SensUs

SensUs is the yearly international student competition on sensors for health.

About us

An important aim in healthcare is to keep people healthy as long as possible and to enable people in need of care to live a high-quality life in their own environments. Healthcare is developing toward a world wherein care is delivered in a highly personalized manner, attuned to the status of the patient, based on actual, precise and reliable data. This is where biosensors play a big role.

The High School Project

The SensUs High Schools Project: inspiring and stimulating teenagers towards innovation and biosensors.

In 2017, SensUs organized a pilot competition for high school students. Students worked in small groups on a chosen biomarker related to the SensUs 2017 theme. They developed a biosensor and presented their results and ideas during SensUs 2017.

This pilot was very promising so for SensUs 2018 this concept will be elaborated. Students from three participating high schools in the Eindhoven region will work on a new concept for a biosensor relating to this year’s theme. In September, they will present their results during SensUs 2018.

SensUs wants to stimulate young, talented students towards technical projects. They can experience the process of developing new, innovative ideas in a group. SensUs reaches out to a new public and thereby raises the awareness of the importance of biosensing.

Digital

In September SensUs 2018 takes place in Eindhoven. Participating student teams from all over the world come to Eindhoven to present their biosensors to the public. Professionals, companies, students, patients and general public will attend SensUs 2018 to see and experience the latest developments in the world of biosensing. SensUs wants to spread its vision and mission regarding biosensors across the globe. Therefore, SensUs Digital is being developed. On this online platform, people from all over the world can watch SensUs 2018 live and experience all the new updates in the field of biosensing. SensUs Digital will include a livestream, information about the teams and this year’s theme, live results, voting, Q&A and much more. SensUs wants to connect people worldwide and thereby exchange knowledge and experience regarding biosensors.

The mission of SensUs is to stimulate the development of biosensors in a friendly competitive manner whereby students make and design innovative biosensors. Each year, a societally impactful indicator of health is chosen as objective in collaboration with different stakeholders.

The participating teams come from 13 countries and 5 different continents. Those teams consist of students from multiple scientific disciplines. Biosensing technologies are inherently multidisciplinary. To be successful, the teams need to creatively combine molecular technologies and device technologies.

The style of the competition is ‘friendly competitive’. Teams of students compete for different prizes. However, it is equally important that teams learn from each other, share information, and sow seeds for international collaboration.

SensUs Organization

SensUs is organized for students by students. The organization of SensUs consists of second and third year bachelor students of different fields at the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Each member has joined for a different goal, but all members want to contribute to the future of health. Our organization has been founded by professor Menno Prins.
