Article 'A Landau-de Gennes theory for hard colloidal rods: Defects and tactoids' editor's choice 2016 of The Journal of Chemical Physics

In this #jcpedchoice, the authors map the Onsager theory for hard rods onto a Landau-de Gennes theory, and not only accurately reproduce the transition between the bulk isotropic and nematic phases but also the detailed structure of their planar interface. We apply the theory and probe the structure of radial hedgehog defects, linear defects in square cavities and nematic tactoids.
