Project on Terahertz photo-magnonics granted
A project on Terahertz photo-magnonics has been granted in the very competitive NWO Physics “Projectruimte”. In this project, one PhD student and a postdoctoral researcher will explore the potential of using spin currents, driven by femtosecond laser pulses, to excite spin wave modes with THz frequency, which quantum mechanically manifest as magnons. Combining our novel theoretical framework with nanoscale experiments, will open up a new field of THz photo-magnonics which is envisioned as a future energy-efficient and versatile information technology. Bert Koopmans will act as project leader, while further expertise and supervision will be provided by Reinoud Lavrijsen and Rembert Duine. The project will exploit insight acquired in pioneering experiments performed by our PhD student Mark Lalieu.
