Paul van der Schoot is a soft matter theorist, working on the boundary between physics, chemistry, biology and nanoscience. He obtained his PhD with Prof. Theo Odijk at Delft University of Technology and held postdoctoral research positions at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, UK, the Max Planck Institute for Colloids and Interfaces near Berlin, Germany, and the van’t Hoff Laboratory in Utrecht, The Netherlands. His current position is that of senior lecturer (associate professor) at TU Eindhoven with the group Theory of Polymers and Soft Matter, and in 2009 was appointed (part-time) Lorentz professor of theoretical physics at the Institute of Theoretical Physics of Utrecht University. Research themes include the application of statistical mechanical theory to synthetic and natural supramolecular assemblies, liquid crystals, interfacial phenomena, percolation, proteins, polymers and colloidal particles. He has been active in the field of theoretical virus physics for more than ten years.
