Third year student Biomedical Engineering (BMT).
Why did you choose this major?
I was very interested in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology and therefore I looked for a study that combines these subjects. I did not want to specialize in one specific subject, but I wanted to maintain the diversity. In my search, I looked at five studies that combined these subjects, but after multiple information days and orientation days I chose Biomedical Engineering and so far I have no regrets!
What do you like most about Biomedical Engineering?
This study enables everyone to discover multiple fields of expertise. The first year consists mainly of basic courses, helping you to decide in which direction you want to proceed. In the second and third year you can choose the courses and direction you would like to specialize in. This freedom of choice ensures you can follow the courses you like and are good at.
Which direction did you choose during your Bachelor?
I followed the basic courses from the Bachelor College and BME and I chose the courses on Computational Biology and Chemical Biology. In the future, I wish to combine research in the laboratory with processing data using computer programming. I always enjoyed working in the lab, and programming was a real challenge for me.
Where would you like to work in the future?
At this moment, I would love to continue doing research at the TU/e, however it also interests me to work at a company. This would enable me to help the company to improve their product or solve a problem with the knowledge and experience I got from my study at the TU/e.
What do you do next to your study?
Since my first year, I was involved in sports: swimming with Nayade and cycling with Squadra Veloce. Furthermore I am a member of the ‘Eindhovens Studenten Corps’ since my first year; this enlarged my student life and my contacts a lot. During my second year I joined the iGEM-project. In a team of eleven students we joined this international competition in synthetic biology. Starting in January we developed a molecular biosensor in the bacteria E-coli. During the summer we went to the final presentations in Boston and won the price for Best Innovation in Measurement. In this project I learned a lot about the entire cycle of a research project and how to implement the results in society.
