Each course is composed of lectures and guided selfstudy. In line with the rest of the bachelor's program, your technological knowledge will be applied to (bio)medical problems.


The lectures focus mainly on theory. In a lecture hall you will be listening to a lecturer who will point out the most important issues of the course. This is particularly useful when studying the matter, however it is not compulsory to attend the lectures. At the end of each lecture the lecturer will tell you what he or she expects you to study at home.

Guided selfstudy

In the guided self-study hours you will process and apply the theory by making assignments. You will work individually or in teams with you fellow students. If you can't figure out how it works yourself, you can always ask your questions to the present lecturer. Frequently asked questions are sometimes discussed plenary.


Courses are completed by an exam. You have to complete this exam successfully in order to get credit points for the course. You need a sufficient amount of credit points to gain a positive study recommendation at the end of your first year. A study recommendation is binding. In order to get a bachelor's degree, you need to complete all exams successfully.

Cell and tissue
This course covers the basic characteristics and parts of cells and tissues. We are learning about tissues, like bone, tendon, cartilage and muscle tissue, that are mechanically stressed. We see how structure and composition is adapted and optimized to function. We also take a microscopy, histology and cutting practicum.
In this course you will learn about the cell, a complex system. You will go through the most important functions and organelles of the cell. We will pay attention to processes like gene regulation, signaling within a cell, the working of the immune system and cell division.
Heart and Blood
During this course you will gain knowledge on the anatomy, physiology and pathology of the heart, the vascular-, and the respiratory system. We will discuss development of the systems in the embryo and after birth. Also, we discuss problems that could occur in the systems, like atherosclerosis and heart failure.
