Pharmacokinetic models are used to describe the time evolution of drug concentrations under influence of absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion. One application is targeted drug delivery, where drug release can be triggered by HIFU induced temperature increase within the diseased tissue. One of the approaches is to use temperature sensitive liposomes that contain the actual drug and release them at higher temperatures. This leads to various interesting modelling challenges, like the computation of drug concentrations as function of time and space and its dependence on the various parameters, e.g., the drug release rate.
