Prof. dr. ir. Bart M. ter Haar Romenij
Bart M. ter Haar Romeny is professor of medical image analysis group (IMAG/e) at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Eindhoven University of Technology, and distinguished professor at Northeastern University in Shenyang, China. Appointed as full-time professor in 2001, he handed over the chair to prof. Josien Pluim in 2013 for medical reasons. From 1989-2001 he was associate professor at the Image Sciences Institute of Utrecht University. Education: MSc in Applied Physics (1978) at Delft University of Technology, PhD (1983) at Utrecht University in 1983. He is EAMBES Fellow, and Senior IEEE member. He has been president of the Dutch Society for Clinical Physics, of the Dutch Soc. for Biophysics and Biomedical Engineering, and is currently president of the Dutch Society for Pattern Recognition and Image Processing. He received the Wolfram Technology Innovator Award in 2013. He is project leader of the Sino-Dutch RetinaCheck project, a large screening program for diabetic retinopathy in Northeast China.
Bart's research interests are medical image analysis, its foundations and clinical applications. In order to understand image structure and analysis, much inspiration is found in the human visual system. His interests are in particular the mathematical modelling of front-end vision, linear and non-linear scale-space theory, medical computer vision applications, computer-aided diagnosis, molecular imaging, differential geometry and visual perception. He authored about 160 papers, conference contributions and book chapters on these issues, holds 2 patents, authored an interactive tutorial book on perceptually inspired multi-scale image analysis, edited a book on non-linear diffusion theory in Computer Vision and is involved in (resp. initiated) a number of international collaborations on these subjects. He is a frequent and award-winning lecturer, and enthusiastic user of Mathematica.
