Controlled delivery of antibacterial agents for the treatment of heart valve related infections
Surgical heart valve replacement is considered as a gold standard for the treatment of advanced heart valve disease. The prosthetic valves, however, may cause bacterial infection. This infection can further induce subsequent serious, even life-threatening infections such as endocarditis, which is associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Moreover, the invaded bacteria can reside inside the endothelial cells and shield themselves from host immune system and antibiotic treatment. This scenario imposes new challenge for the treatment of endocarditis.
To address these problems, this project aims at the intracellular delivery of antimicrobial peptides into the endothelial cells by using supramolecular ureido-pyrimidinone (UPy)-based materials as drug carriers. The intracellular distribution and antibacterial effects will be studied in detail.
