Dr. ir. S. (Silvia) Wognum
Silvia Wognum is a lecturer ("Toegevoegd docent") in the groups medical image analysis (IMAG/e) and Computational Biology. She is responsible for several educational tasks within both groups, as well as in the rest of the BME department. Silvia has a broad background in various biomedical engineering subjects. She studied Biomedical Engineering at the TU/e from 1998 to 2005, where she graduated in the Soft Tissue Biomechanics group on the subject of intervertebral disc degeneration, using a combination of experimental and modeling approaches. She continued working in this group for half a year on the development of a novel swelling intervertebral disc prosthesis as well as on writing a patent application for this. After this, she moved to the USA where she pursued a PhD in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh from 2005 to 2010. The focus of her dissertation research was elucidating the remodeling processes that take place in urinary bladder tissue (collagen, elastin, smooth muscle) as a result of spinal cord injury, using computational modeling approaches and experimental data from rat models of spinal cord injury. In 2010 she returned to The Netherlands and worked for a little over three years as a postdoctoral researcher at the department of Radiation Therapy of the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam. Her research there focused on developing and applying nonrigid image registration techniques to (cone beam) CT data of bladder cancer patients to account for organ deformation and tumor motion.
