Ir. E.J. (Erik) Bekkers

Erik Bekkers is as a PhD student at the Medical Image Analysis Group at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). He also works as research engineer at the medical device company i-Optics. He has a former education in Biomedical Engineering (BSc+MSc from TU/e) and Mechanical Engineering (P from TU/e). His PhD project is entitled “Sub-Riemannian Geometry in Retinal Image Analysis”, and is part of the academic-industrial research grant NWO Hé-Programme of innovation (co-funded by i-Optics). Within the application of retinal image analysis the main focus is on the modeling and detection of key anatomical landmarks and the extraction of biomarkers for diabetes research. From a methodological point of view, focus is on the development of image analysis methods based on sub-Riemannian geometry and Lie group analysis (where in particular the Euclidean motion group is considered). His research interests involve medical image analysis, differential geometry, convex optimization and biomarker research.
