Strain-induced initiation and progression of articular cartilage damage

Cartilage is a thin, white, smooth and glistening layer that covers diarthrodial joints. It’s aneural and without blood supply.  Its major components are proteoglycans, collagen type II, chondrocytes (30% solid) and water (70% fluid). Breakdown of cartilage leads osteoarthritis (OA), which results from mechanical, biochemical or humoral factors [1].

Know the mechanism by which cartilage is becoming damaged is important for clinicians to apply early and effective treatments in patients with OA. Because of it, the aim of this research is to find the main mechanical and biochemical factors that induce directly to early damage in cartilage.
