Simone Wouters received her Bachelor degree Biomedical Engineering in 2013. She continued at the Eindhoven University of Technology with her master degree Biomedical Engineering in the Protein Engineering research group of Prof. dr. M. Merkx. During her master thesis she developed light-switchable 14-3-3 proteins. She currently holds a PhD position in the same group where her research is focussed on the controlled activation of antibodies. A bivalent DNA-based ligand was developed to block the antigen-binding sites of antibodies. By using external triggers, that disrupt the bivalency of the ligand, the inhibition of the antibody can be reversed. Protease cleavage and strand-displacement have already been used as trigger. During the project, Simone will extend the triggers and use the system to control therapeutic antibodies such as Cetuximab.
