The number of people diagnosed with diabetes or metabolic disorders are expected to dramatically increase in the following decades and is evident that it will be a huge burden to future generations. Understanding how these diseases function on the molecular level is of utmost importance for the development of suitable drugs. However, until very recently, it was not understood how the current anti-diabetic medicines exerted their effects (and side-effects). Now, it seems that small chemical modifications on a class of proteins called nuclear receptors play a key role in the cause and cure of these diseases. My research therefore focusses on studying these post-translational modifications of the PPAR gamma and FXR nuclear receptors via the combination of chemical and biological methods, allowing for a more clear insight on the molecular function of these modifications.
