Biography

After receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering in 2013, Eline Sijbesma joined the Chemical Biology group as an undergraduate student. During her Master’s graduation project she worked on elucidating the binding mode of natural compound Estrogen Receptor modulators, in close collaboration with the group of dr. Wilbert Zwart at the Dutch Cancer Institute (NKI-AVL). Additionally, she performed an internship at the Small Molecule Discovery Center (SMDC) in the group of Michelle Arkin, PhD at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) where she initiated a fragment-based drug discovery project that explores protein-protein interactions as novel drug targets. For this internship she was awarded a travel grant from the Nora Baart Foundation (NVBMB) and a Scholarship by the Dr Hendrik Muller’s Fund. Eline obtained her Master of Science degree cum laude in 2015 and started her PhD under supervision of professor dr. ir. Luc Brunsveld and dr. Christian Ottmann. Her project focusses on the interactions between 14-3-3 proteins and Nuclear Receptors and continues on results obtained at the SMDC. The approach combines chemical biology, drug discovery and medicinal chemistry aided by structural insights from x-ray crystallography to study the potential and molecular mechanism of PPI stabilization by small molecules.
