Noortje Bax studied Biology at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, the Netherlands. During her study she performed 3 internships: 1) Department of Obstetric and Gynaecology of the UMC St. Radboud, Nijmegen titled: "Fertilisation in Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase knock-out mice oocytes". 2) Department of Orthodontics and Oral Biology of the UCM St. Radboud, Nijmegen titled: "Tissue-engineering of Oral Mucosa:". 3) Department of Cardiology of the LUMC, Leiden titled: " Vasculogenesis or angiogenesis after mesenchymal stem cell therapy?". In april 2006 she started as a PhD student at the department of Anatomy & Embryology of the LUMC, Leiden. Her research concerned the role of Platelet-derived growth factors (PDGFs) in the development of second heart field derived cardiac structures. And secondly, she focussed on the rol of epicardium-derived cells (EPDCs) in epithelial-to-mesenchymal transformation (EMT) and cardiomyocyte differentiation. The defence of her thesis entitled: "Posterior heart field and epicardium in cardiac development: PDGFRα and EMT" will be in January 2011. Since september 2010 she is part of the division Soft tissue Biomechanics and Engineering. Together with Prof. CVC. Bouten she will work on cell-matrix interactions in cardiovascular tissue engineering for the project "Myocardium in a dish".
