Combining vehicular and ICT technologies for driving behaviour

PHAROS aims at combining vehicular and ICT technologies for collecting and analyzing historic and real-time data about driving behaviour, routing information, and the associated carbon emissions measurements. PHAROS sets the following objectives:

  • Optimizing driving behaviour through effective decision making for the enhancement of drivers education and the formation of effective policies about optimal traffic operations (speeding, braking, etc.), based on the analytical results over the data that associate driving-behaviour patterns with CO2 emissions;
  • Eco-routing for suggesting most environmental-friendly routes that reduce overall kilometers driven and CO2 emissions;
  • Multi-modality that allows fleets operating based on various transport modes and take decisions about how to: i) balance capacity within and throughout modes of transport, ii) reduce their environmental footprint by comparing consumption data and alternative routing information that involve mode changing, iii) develop efficient driver policies for their entire set of vehicles and not only for isolated modes. PHAROS will work towards providing innovative solutions to problems in a number of scientific and technological topics such as mobile communications, cloud computing, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) offering the following features:
  • Support of on-line and mobile information services to the system users with advice on environmental conditions, in-route traffic conditions, and fuel consumption;
  • Enhanced navigation services by using adaptive algorithms for dynamic route guidance and schedule, e.g. with historic data, least fuel routing;
  • Cooperative eco-driving – providing the driver with support, feedback and guidance on a more fuel-efficient driving behavior (e.g. CO2 production or cost/saving in monetary terms);
  • On board monitoring for dynamic traffic adaptation, adaptive cruise control with support of geographical maps and location information. PHAROS will construct a functional prototype of a smart operational system that makes use of multi agent system to provide the travelers/operators with real time routing recommendations to minimize fuel consumption and emissions. The end user of proposed system will be offered with an easy to use graphical user interface for information analysis and administration tasks.
