Motorized urban mobility comes at significant social, environmental, and economic costs to cities around the world, yet cheap, efficient, and sustainable transport has the potential of unlocking access to jobs, markets, education, social interactions, and other opportunities that cities have to offer. In particular, urban designers have focused on the negative impact of automobiles on the quality of public space in cities, and cycling is seen as a viable alternative to combat the symptoms of an automotive society. Compared to motorized transport, cycling also has a positive impact on ecological sustainability, air quality, noise levels, public health, and a liveable urban environment. For this reason, most cities and urban regions in the Netherlands have articulated ambitious cycling policies to encourage growth. While Dutch urban residents already make more trips by bicycle compared to other transit modes, policy makers, planners, and urban designers are articulating even larger ambitions to increase cycling’s mode share to deal with contemporary urban challenges such as pollution, traffic congestion, public health, social inclusion and economic vitality.
