PhD and PDEng candidates

For PhD students and PDEng students there are also several opportunities to get involved in Smart Cities research. At the moment, the Smart Cities Program does not offer scholarships, nor has it open positions. Potential PhD or PDEng students are asked to bring their own funding.

 

 

PhD programs

Design and Decision Support Systems
The DDSS research program aims at developing models and decision support tools for better informed decisions in design and policy decisions in architecture and urban planning. Currently, the focus of attention is targeted as transportation demand forecasting, travel decisions (mobility), city level energy consumptions, building information systems, and urban development and land use. In addition, research on the application of modern technology for data collection is conducted.

Building Physics and Services
Preservation of energy and limitation of the environmental impact while providing a healthy and comfortable indoor and outdoor environment are essential requirements for the built environment. Also taking into account economical, ecological and energetic constraints.

Living Cities
The research program focusses on the sustainable development of the city and its architecture, one of the key societal challenges in our 21st “urban century”, where rapid processes of urbanisation reshape our living environment fundamentally. The research is focussed on five thematic clusters: (i) Cultural Heritage, (ii) Sustainability and Circular Cities, (iii) Active Mobility and Health, (iv) Smart Cities and Buildings, and (v) Emerging Materials and Building Technologies.

During the PhD you will develop into an independent researcher in four years.

PDEng Program | Smart Energy Buildings & Cities

SEB&C is a two-year (post-master) technological designer program. Roughly half of the program consists of post-master level education based on workshops related to entrepreneurship and to the technical disciplines relevant to the built environment (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, building physics and services and ICT). Furthermore, this part of the program offers ample opportunity to develop professional skills. The other half of the program is dedicated to an individual design project in collaboration with a company.

Graduate students who would like to focus on a Smart Cities topic within their graduation project, can contact the Smart Cities Program by sending an e-mail to smartcities@tue.nl. The SCP/e can help students to find the right guidance by tutors and/or companies on their topic of choice.
