‘Explore Atlas’ is, as an exhibition, a preview of what will be the result of the redesign of the main building of the Eindhoven University of Technology. The exhibition is prepared in collaboration with the office that is responsible for the redesign, Team V Architectuur, Amsterdam. As such the exhibition represents the architect’s viewpoint.
CASA Vertigo organizes this exhibition and wants to stimulate a discussion. About how different disciplines think about the solutions in this design. Different disciplines in research and teaching at the Built Environment Department.
Before Vertigo was redesigned by Bert Dirrix, an alumnus of the Department, the exterior of the building looked the same as the one of the main building. Vertigo was (as Arthur Wortmann called it) ‘revamped’. In contrast to the façade of Vertigo, that became optically flattened, Atlas gets an extra (= new) articulation of the grid, by means of an added profile. The color of the new anodized aluminium profile is black-brown.
The original façade of the main building shows a strong resemblance with the one of the Pavilion and Colonnade Apartments in Newark (that were opened in 1960), designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. The redesign by Team V Architectuur refers with its black-brown colored profile to a complete other reference in Mies van der Rohe’s work, from the same period, such as his design for the Bacardi plant in Mexico.
