Research Gijs Wallis de Vries Topics My research topic is landscape. I study the `architectural landscape? in the contemporary city, pursuing the `landscape turn? in architecture defined by Frampton and others. I trace the concept of `architectural landscape? to Piranesi and to the 18th c. landscape garden and its Chinese connection. In my research of the architectural landscape the spatial practices and discourses of escape and alterity correlate. Escape is a powerful motive for the experience and design of landscape as `the outside? of the city. The concept of alterity engages in a critique of the discourse of identity usually attributed to landscape. In the context of leisure and tourism my students examine the vernacular of escape. Theoretical clues are adopted from spatial theory in various disciplines (architecture, urbanism, cultural geography, philosophy). Methods for analysis and modelling include discourse analysis, mapping (narrative, prospective) and diagramming (tectonics, layers, frames). Journals I published on these topics in professional and academic journals: Archis, Blauwe Kamer/Profiel, Forum, De Gids, Kunstlicht, Oase, Traditional Dwellings and Settlements Review (IASTE). As author, contributor and/or editor I also wrote books (issued by 010 publishers, Thoth, SUN, Belin. Recently, I submitted an article on vernacular and globalization to JAE (Journal for Architectural Education). I consider publishing in Places (EDRA Berkeley), Positions, Oase. Conferences I presented at conferences of IGU (cultural geography), ACSA, Cerisy (EHESS), TU Eindhoven (Tectonics), IASTE. Papers have been or will be published in proceedings. Future priorities include ACSA, EAAE, ECLAS, Cerisy, IASTE. Other I am writing a book on Piranesi?s visual discourse on the city, to propose a theory of architectural landscape and its poetics of space. It draws on my dissertation and recent research as well as on dissertations that I co-supervised (Moya, Nijenhuis). It also reflects on my graduation studios that address issues of density and city-scape.
