After his graduation in 1981 Wim Heijs worked as a researcher at the Catholic University of Nijmegen and the Eindhoven University of Technology, conducting contract research on a large variety of subjects in the field of environmental and social psychology (e.g. hypothermia among elderly, residential comfort and dwelling needs, household energy use and recycling behavior, energy-related habitual behavior, road safety, social safety, office design and evaluation, sustainable and liveable environments, and the relations between attitudes, behavior and new technologies).
In 2001 he joined the REMD program and became an associate professor in 2004. Presently he focuses on the theoretical and methodological aspects of user needs analysis, programming and post occupancy evaluation; housing and environments for special groups (elderly, impaired); new residential concepts and possibilities for market segmentation (user groups and residential milieus); policies regarding energy use for housing associations; the liveability of neighbourhoods (safety, sustainability); and place identity and branding.
His teaching includes giving lectures on user needs analysis, programming, evaluation, research methodology and multivariate statistical analysis, and the supervision of students in their second year projects and their master thesis research. Wim Heijs is a member of IAPS (the International Association for People-Environment Studies), EDRA (the Environmental Design and Research Association), the ENHR working group Residential Environments and People, the Eurolink Age Housing Policy Sub-Group, the Include Network, ISSO (Institute for Study and Stimulation of Research into Building Installations, the Netherlands) and the Sustainable Energy Housing Project-development Group (the Netherlands).
