Dr. ir. Rianne Appel is an assistant Professor in real estate at the Department of Architecture, Building and Planning (Eindhoven University of Technology). She is editor of the Journal of CRE, sits on the editorial board of CRE journal and acts as reviewer for several other journals. She is a board member of the European Real Estate Society (ERES) and the Dutch Society for RE researchers (VOGON). In her research, she approaches real estate as a production factor for (knowledge) organisations. She focuses on how Corporate Real Estate (CRE) should be managed and how location, building and workspace design choices add value to driving forces of the users (e.g. productivity of employees, innovativeness of organisations, knowledge sharing, flexibility).

To do this type of research, she uses innovative methods of studying and measuring buildings and their usage, among which spatial network analysis techniques and Bayesian belief networks. Results are always placed within the larger framework of alignment between CRE strategy and corporate strategy. Her PhD research addressed the impact of research buildings on knowledge companies, by studying the underlying mechanisms through which layout stimulates KS behaviour.

She has presented her work at different international scientific conferences and industry seminars and is published in leading scientific real estate and workplace journals, like Property Management, Journal of Property Investment & Finance, Facilities and the Journal of CRE. She also propagates her work to practitioners by publishing in national and international real estate business magazines (e.g. The Leader, Real Estate Research Quarterly) and participating in communities like Corenet (global association for corporate real estate professionals) and the online platform NewWoW.

She teaches Corporate Real Estate, strategic thinking, building analysis and transformation of vacant commercial buildings. Current and recent MSc thesis topics she tutors relate to:

  • New ways of working
  • The added value of buildings for organizations
  • Corporate real estate strategy and management
  • Performance and functionality of office buildings
  • Solutions for office vacancy

Rianne received her MSc in real estate management from TU/e in 1999.

After that, she worked as a consultant for Buck Consultants International and for the international consultancy and engineering group DHV, advising small and large organisations on all kind of CRE issues (site selection, master planning, office design, programs of requirements, project management etc.) for 5 years before becoming an academic.
