Born in Istanbul in 1956, he moved to Frankfurt am Main, Germany in 1966. In 1984 he graduated cum laude from the Department of Architecture, Darmstadt Technical University in 1984 and started working in the office of Gunter Behnisch. In 1986, he founded his office in Darmstadt and won several prizes in architectural competitions. In 1992, he founded his studio in Amsterdam. He won the 1st prize of the Neu-Isenburg Residences and Care Complex for the elderly in 1994. Since 1997 he is Assistant Professor of architectural design at the Department of Architecture at Eindhoven Technical University. After the earthquake of 1999 near Istanbul he designed the Utrecht-Sogutlu Primary School which has been recognized as an important example for low-budget and minimalist design delivering significant architecture. The project has been published in the Architecture Yearbook of Turkey 2004, and participated in the exhibition `Turkey Today?, organized by ARCAM. Since 2004 he is member of the Buildings Aesthetics Committee of Amsterdam. Recently he is working on a studio project `Reclaiming the Karachi Lyari River? that has been developed in cooperation with NED, the Architectural Faculty of the Technical University of Karachi in Pakistan. Since 2005 he is member of the Netherlands Architecture Fund.
