Biography

Drs. Noor Mens studied architectural history and urban planning at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam from 1988-1993. Doctoral thesis: De wederopbouw van Velsen. W.M. Dudok (1884-1974) en W. van Tijen (1894-1974), voor een schone stad; voor een leefbare stad.

Since 1993 see has worked as a freelance architectural historian based in Rotterdam and published on Dutch architecture and urban planning in the twentieth century.

Since 2013 she works as a researcher at the Eindhoven University of Technology where she started her PHD research in 2014. The topic of her research is: Assessing the cultural values of Post-war neighbourhoods. Case study: Western Garden Cities in Amsterdam. The aim of this research is the development of an architectural heritage significance assessment method to determine the architectural and urban values of the post-war neighbourhoods, using the Western Garden Cities as a case study. These values can play a fundamental role in future transformation and reconstruction processes. Starting point of this research is a thorough architectural historical inquiry into the characteristic qualities of the Western Garden Cities. These neighbourhoods were internationally acclaimed as showcases for the modern architectural and urban ideas.
