Strategy for the department of the built environment 2014-2020
The world around us is changing. To play a significant role in a dynamic environment it is of the utmost importance that our department is future-proof. That is why the department of the built environment made a renewed strategy for 2014-2020.
Our ambitions are challenging. Our academic education and scientific research must provide answers to current and future socially relevant issues and technological challenges in the built environment. Only then can we demand our role as an international player that offers trendsetting and innovative solutions to the global challenges of Energy, Health and Smart Mobility and trains professionals who make a major contribution to this.
We claim our internationally leading role, both within the TU/e and beyond by striving for international recognition through our top-quality academic education and fundamental scientific research.
One important precondition to realise our ambitions is balancing our academic education and scientific research. We actively involve students in our research projects and will carry out more fundamental research.
Partnerships are central to this both outside and within the TU/e. We will work across the boundaries of the traditional organisation in which we strive for multidisciplinary partnerships. We focus on socially relevant topics within the built environment here which respond to the global challenges of Energy, Health and Smart Mobility. The built environment is pivotal in this as these global challenges occur in this.
We have chosen three overarching topics:
1. Quality of life
We contribute to improving health, comfort, safety, culture, recreation and mobility in the built environment. Quality of life is aimed at people as users of the built environment.
2. Smart Living Environments
We provide a significant contribution to intelligent and innovative solutions for infrastructure, mobility, climate change, buildings and urban environments. Smart Living Environments is about creating the built environment and the use of smart technology and designs within it.
3. Sustainable Transformation
We offer solutions for increasingly scarce space in our living environment with a focus on rezoning, reuse and restructuring.
The topics run through our current research programmes and disciplines and will lead our teaching and research. They are characterised by their multi-scale nature: from building materials at a micro level to urban design at a macro level. In addition, the topics have a multidisciplinary character and require an integral approach with man as user at the centre.
For us the 2020 Strategy is a dot on the horizon. The realisation requires long-term planning and the right phasing. In the first phase, the activities are done required to form a solid basis and to realise quick wins. In the second phase (2015 to 2017) we will further develop and implement the plans. The final phase (until 2020) consists of evaluation and adjustment. Our ambitions require commitment and a proactive attitude from all employees and students. Multidisciplinary partnership within and beyond the faculty are central to this. The frameworks have been defined. Shaping the interpretation and final translation of our ambitions is for all of us together.
