Shell's Simulation models of oil reservoirs are very complex and computational intensive models. To use the models for various applications like planning and reservoir management, they need to be reduced in complexity. Control Systems group uses systems theory based model reduction techniques to find more simple models with still adequate performance.
To optimally exploit an oil field model-based optimization techniques are used. These try to optimize the economic life cycle of a reservoir taking into account geological models and varying economic parameters. Control systems group uses robust optimization techniques to reduce the uncertainties that are present in the current models SHELL uses.
