Extension of the applications of disconnectors in high-voltage grids

The aim of the project is to develop high-voltage air-break disconnectors that have an increased current interruption capability. Up to now, disconnecting switches only need to make a visible disconnection between various parts of power networks. The disconnection has only a safety function. That disconnectors do have a certain (very small) current interruption capability, is usually taken for granted, but very often exploited in the interruption of very small capacitive current in unloaded busbars, lines etc.

In future intelligent networks, where more flexibility is needed in configuration of path for power and where there will be more switching, there will arise a need to increase the current interruption capability of disconnecting switches. (link to IOP paper Chai)
