Biography

Hans van Assen is a researcher on medical image analysis within the subgroup Biomedical Diagnostics of the Signal Processing Systems group. The topics of Hans' research are 1) cardiac left ventricle motion and deformation quantification, 2) cardiac left atrium wall characterisation for electrophysiology ablation guidance and assessment, and 3) the use of Indicator Dilution Curves for the assessment of blood volumes, important for patients in the critical care unit.

Hans van Assen started his career by studying Applied Physics at the Delft University of Technology. He graduated in 1995, in what is currently called the Quantitative Imaging group, and now part of the Imaging Science and Technology department led by prof. Lucas van Vliet. Hans’ final project was about collision avoidance of multiple robots in a flexible assembly cell, supervised by prof. Pieter Jonker, with whom he would set up and give the Basic Image Processing course at the department of Biomedical Engineering at the TU/e from 2008-2011.

Between his graduation and the start of his PhD project, Hans performed medical image analysis research at LKEB (dept. Radiology, LUMC, Leiden, Netherlands) for four years on peripheral vascular segmentation and stenosis quantification. Some results from that research have recently been built into commercial analysis software QAngio XA by Medis Medical Imaging Systems.

In 2006, Hans obtained his PhD at the medical department of Leiden University. He performed his PhD research also at LKEB (Laboratory for Clinical and Experimental Image Processing). His PhD thesis (2000-2005) is on 3D Active Shape Modeling for the segmentation of the cardiac left ventricle.

From 2005 until 2011, he was first a postdoc and later an assistant professor in the field of Cardiac Image Analysis at the BMIA group of the the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology. He has been a member of a number of PhD committees (at TU/e and abroad) and is currently co-advisor of a few PhD projects. Hans is a member of the IEEE (and IEEE EMBS) and the Dutch Society for Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (NVPHBV), and he is a reviewer for a number of top journals (IEEE Trans. Medical Imaging, IEEE Trans. Information Technology in Biomedicine, IEEE Trans Biomedical Engineering, Investigative Radiology, International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery) and top conferences (MICCAI, IPMI, ICCV, IEEE ISBI, ICPR, EuroGraphics).
