Biography: Stuart Stephen Papworth Parkin (9 December 1955) is an experimental physicist, IBM Fellow and manager of the magnetoelectronics group at the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California. Since April 1, 2014, Prof. Dr. Stuart Parkin is director at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics in Halle and Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg. Prof. Parkin is a pioneer in the science and application of spintronic materials, and has made discoveries into the behavior of thin-film magnetic structures that were critical in enabling recent increases in the data density and capacity of computer hard-disk drives. For these discoveries, he was awarded the 2014 Millennium Technology Prize. In 2008 Parkin received an honorary doctorate at our university, and is a TU/e distinguished professor since then.
After the colloquium (around 16:30) we organize a mini-colloquium in which two COBRA researchers, will give a short presentation about his or her work.
