COBRA Colloquium Friday September, 14 2012

COBRA COLLOQUIUM: Friday September 14, 2012 at 15:00 – 16:00 in the Film Theater of Grand Café and Film house De Zwarte Doos

Speaker: Dr. Hiroshi Takahashi

Title: Integrated-optic devices for advanced optical communications developed using silica planar lightwave circuit technology

Abstract: Both high density multiplexing and high speed transmission are required for large capacity optical networks supporting broadband service penetration. This talk will review feature of silica waveguide planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology and state-of-the-art devices fabricated with PLC for use in such systems. Ultra wideband (flat spectrum) AWG wavelength multiplexer, optical OFDM filter, demodulator for coherent detection (dual polarization optical 90-deg hybrid), silica-LN hybrid modulator are reviewed.

Biography: Hiroshi Takahashi was born in Japan and joined NTT Laboratories in 1988, where he engaged in research on silica-based optical waveguide devices, including arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) wavelength multi/demultiplexers. From 1998 to 2001, he was with NTT Electronics where he developed the first AWG multi/demultiplexer for commercial DWDM systems. He is currently a research group leader at NTT Photonics Laboratories and is leading research on a new optical waveguide design based on the wavefront matching (WFM) method and various kinds of waveguide devices such as ultra-wide passband AWGs, Mach-Zehnder interferometer-based switches, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM) modules, dispersion compensators, optical OFDM filters, modulators/demodulators for coherent systems. He is a senior member of the IEEE and the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers of Japan, and a member of the Japan Society of Applied Physics. He received bachelor, master and Ph.D degrees from Tohoku University.

After the colloquium (around 16:00) we organize a mini-colloquium in which three COBRA researchers, one from each of the three COBRA groups, will give a short presentation about his or her work.

For the Electro Optical Communication Group:
Speaker: Haoshuo Chen          Title: Silicon photonics for mode division (de)multiplexing
For the Photonic Integration Group:
Speaker: Saeed Tahvili            Title: Integrated photonic pulse shapers
For the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics Group:
Speaker: Erwin Smakman       Title: Light manipulation of single impurities

The audience is invited to an informal gathering following the colloquium in the lounge of Grand Café and Film house De Zwarte Doos.

The next COBRA Colloquium will take place on Friday, October 12, 2012
Location:         TU/e, the Film Theater of Grand Café and Film house De Zwarte Doos
Time:               15:00 hours
