Title: A solid-state quantum interface
Abstract: Realization of a quantum interface between stationary and flying qubits is a requirement for long-distance quantum communication and distributed quantum computation. The prospects for integrating many qubits on a single chip render solid-state spins promising
candidates for stationary qubits. An important class of solid-state spin systems, including quantum dots and nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond, exhibit spin-state-dependent optical transitions, allowing for fast initialization, manipulation and measurement of the spins using
laser excitation. In this talk, I will describe recent experiments based on semiconductor quantum dots demonstrating spin-photon entanglement and teleportation of quantum information from a propagating photonic qubit to a confined spin qubit. These experiments pave the way for realization of entanglement between distant spin qubits.
Biography: Atac Imamoglu was born in Minneapolis, USA in 1964 and obtained his Bachelors degree from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. After receiving his PhD from Stanford University in 1991, he worked at NTT Basic Research Laboratories and the Institute of Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics at Harvard as a postdoctoral fellow. He joined the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1993 as an assistant professor, and was promoted to full professorship in 1999. In 2002, he was nominated as a full professor at ETH Zurich. The honors he has received include the Charles Townes Award of the OSA in 2010, the Quantum Electronics Award of IEEE in 2009, an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant in 2008, The Muhammed Dahled Award of UC Santa Barbara in 2006 and the Wolfgang Pauli Award of the Humboldt Foundation in 2002. He is a fellow of APS (2002) and of OSA (2001).
After the colloquium (around 16:30) we organize a mini-colloquium in which two COBRA researchers, will give a short presentation about his or her work.
