Royal distinction for professor Bambang Oetomo
Professor Sidarto Bambang Oetomo has been distinguished as 'Ridder in de Orde van de Nederlandse Leeuw' for his medical work. In 2003 he started at Maxima Medical Center as a pediatrician in neonatology where he worked on innovations for premature babies. He focused on the development of technology to prevent pain and stress and to promote the bond between mother and child.
As part-time Professor at Industrial Design, Sidarto Bambang Oetomo was involved in the projects of SmartJacket and Mimo which resulted in Hugsy – a kind of cross between a mattress and a blanket that vibrates softly in the - recorded - rhythm of the mother’s heartbeat. The mortality rate among incubator babies was reduced considerably due to his work; Bambang Oetomo has meant a lot to premature children. He retired in June 2017.
