Successful edition of CHI for Industrial Design

This year’s international Human-Computer Interaction Conference, CHI2018, in Montréal (Canada) was a huge success for the department of Industrial Design at TU/e. The number of TU/e ID contributions was exceptionally high. Also the special "TU/e-sday (Tuesday)" party was particularly well attended with over 250 international researchers including high officials of the ACM CHI steering boards; according to many, it was ‘THE‘ party to be. 

CHI conference is THE top venue in Human-Computer Interaction with an H5-index of 85. During the 2018 ACM CHI Conference, Industrial Design showed they are one of the leading departments in the field of Human Computer Interaction. Over 3000 researchers and practitioners from across the world gathered to discuss the latest in interactive technology. Acceptance rates are highly competitive at about 20 percent, with thousands of paper submissions each year, which speaks to the top-notch quality of those accepted and their visibility in the broader research community. With twelve publications and several workshops, demonstrations and case studies, a design prize and three honourable mentions, ID showed the world its leading role in HCI.

Congratulations to Caroline Overgoor et al. for winning this year's Best Design Exploration Award with the IdleBot video. And to the honorable mentions for Ripple Thermostat by Anke van Oosterhout (alumna at AU), Miguel Bruns Alonso en Satu Jumisko-Pyykkö (Vincit), Data-enabled Design Explorations by Janne van Kollenburg (Philips/ID), Sander Bogers (Philips/ID), Heleen Rutjes (HTI), Eva Deckers (alumna at Philips), Joep Frens en Caroline Hummels and Tilting Bowl by Ron Wakkary (SFU/ID), Doenja Oogjes (alumna at SFU), Henry Lin (SFU) en Sabrina Hauser (SFU).

In addition, research work by Rong-Hao Liang et al. of the Future Everyday group of TU/e ID, was featured in an article in the Fast Company magazine article, entitled "Inventing the Next Computer", as one of the "six of the conference’s most fascinating prototypes" from CHI 2018, alongside works from Carnegie Mellon University and MIT Media Lab.
