Elselijn Kingma is Socrates Professor in the Philosophy of Ethics of Biotechnology at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Her academic interests lie in Philosophy of Science and Philosophy of Mind. Her research focuses on philosophy of medicine (concepts of health and disease and the epistemology of Evidence Based Medicine); applied (bio)ethics (rights, interests and obligations in pregnancy and birth); metaphysics (the metaphysics of pregnancy, identity and personhood). Elselijn has published on these topics in a variety of philosophy journals, medical journals, and the popular press, and offers research-based advice to policy makers, professional organizations and other groups involved in the care of pregnant women.
Elselijn obtained her masters degrees in Clinical Medicine and Cognitive Psychology at the University of Leiden, the Netherlands, between 1999 and 2004. From 2004-2008 she read History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge, where she obtained her MPhil and PhD.
In addition to her work at TU/e Elselijn is a Teaching and Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science. She was previously Research Fellow on concepts of Health and Disease at the Wellcome Centre for Humanities and Health/Department of Philosophy, King's College London and Post-Doctoral Fellow at the department of Bioethics, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Washington DC.
