New research program on advanced high strength steel production
Eindhoven University of Technology is part of a unique research programme to improve new steel product development. 16 PhD students, 2 PDeng students and 1 PostDoc will work closely together at TATA steel Europe to develop a fitting computational model to dramatically shorten time to market without compromising on steel production efficiency.
The drive for lighter cars and less material in construction calls for the development of stronger steels. Complex, multi-phase, advanced high strength steels are exemplary for such purposes, however still require improvements in application performance and production yield.
In collaboration with the Materials Innovation Institute (M2i), TATA steel Europe in IJmuiden (Netherlands), the technical Universities of Delft, Twente and Eindhoven, and the Max Planck Institut für Eisenforschung in Düsseldorf (Germany), the Mechanics of Materials research group will work on the development of several computational models that simulate the microstructure of advanced high strength steels throughout the production process and the mechanical behaviour of the eventual end-product.
This Digitally Enhanced New Steel Product Development (DENS) programme has a unique scientific and industrial aim, where fundamental science will directly benefit industrial application. Currently available state-of-the-art sub models will be connected in one through process model framework and simplified models, suitable for online control, will be developed. The through process modelling chain will be calibrated by high throughput laboratory experiments at the production site.
In the DENS research programme16 PhD students, 2 PDeng students and 1 PostDoc will work closely together at TATA steel Europe. The TU/e research group Mechanics of Materials will be looking for 2 PhD students to contribute to this programme.
