4P570 - Energy conversion


The first part of the course concerns the theoretical tools which are essential for the analysis of these systems.
This starts from the introduction of engineering thermodynamic analysis: first and second law, (Carnot)efficiency, steam cycles, etc. The key issue is the maximum attainable efficiency from both theoretical and practical point of view. Next, the heattransfer processes are examined and applied to the description of heat-exchangers, boilers and heating equipment. As a last step, both thermodynamic analysis and heat transfer theory are used to design the basic lay-out of a power plant. The first block is concluded with a written exam. In the second part of the students are asked to design the power plant in detail. The design process is guided by supporting lectures. The second block is concluded with a group report in which the total design is discussed.
