Innovation

All of our research is closely linked to applications, and we have close collaborations with industrial partners to develop innovations. In Microsystems applications, a number of trends can be observed:

  • Miniaturization
  • Increased integration of functionalities
  • Adaptivity
  • Low-energy consumption
  • Interaction / merging with biological materials
  • Low-cost manufacturing approaches

We provide new approaches to microsystem design and manufacture to continue the trends – dealing with fundamental issues of size effects, and requirements for new applications.

Our applications focus on (1) biological and biomedical applications, (2) water quality monitoring and purification, and (3) advanced microsystems such as medical devices, high precision metrology, flexible electronics, and advanced sensors and actuators.

Apart from working with partners like Philips, Holst Center, and DSM, our group is also the birth place of the start-up company Xpress.
