New group member Susana Petisco Ferrero
Susana Petisco Ferrero received the Diploma of Higher Education in Industrial Chemistry in 2003. As a student in 2002, she spent three months in Intertek Caleb Brett Ibérica, S.A. as a laboratory technician where she developed her interest in materials characterization. Accordingly, she obtained her Engineer’s Degree in Materials Science in 2006, at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU), while she was employed as a laboratory assistant in the R & D Dept. in Montero, Fibras y Elastomeros S. A. for three years.
In 2007, she joined the Biomaterials research group (ZIBIO) at the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU), where she combined the setup of an ambitious entrepreneurial project (Bilbao Biomaterials Institute, S. L.), with the pursuit of her PhD-degree, which was partially developed at the Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials-National University of Ireland Galway (NFB-NUIG). Under the heading “Biodegradable Thermoplastic Elastomers: Tuning Viscoelastic properties and Shape memory” she explored in detail the processing-structure-properties triad of lactide derived (co)polymers. Her experimental expertise include standard material characterization techniques such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Polarized Light Optical Microscopy (PLOM), (Modulated) Differential Scanning Calorimetry ((M)DSC), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), Tensile testing, Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Regarding polymer processing, she has expertise in thermosetting (calendaring) and thermoplastic (injection moulding, compression moulding and extrusion) processing techniques and plasma vapour deposition (PVD).
From February 2017, she is a guest postdoctoral member of the Polymer Technology Group working in the enticing project entitled “Approaching biological mechanical stimuli: Miniaturized mechanical testing”, funded by the Basque Government under the “Programa Posdoctoral de Perfeccionamiento de Personal Investigador” funding scheme.
