Prediction of Long-Term Performance of Engineering Plastics
Engineering polymers are used in a multitude of demanding, load-bearing applications where structural integrity and long-term reliability are of the utmost relevance, and estimation of a products lifetime is far from evident, whereas multiple mechanisms eventually could cause catastrophic failure (accumulation of plastic strain, slow crack growth and molecular degradation). At present their reliability can only be warranted after full-scale testing of actual products, which is a costly and time-consuming procedure, hampering optimization and a flexible response to market demands. In this project, the aim is to develop generic new methods, tools, and protocols that allow a fast, flexible and accurate estimation of the lifetime of polymers under load.
