Times Higher ranks TU Eindhoven among the 100 best in the world in two disciplines. In the 'World University Rankings 2016-2017 results by subject' TU/e is 64th in 'Engineering and Technology' and 75th in the 'Computer Science' list. In the comprehensive Times Higher Education ranking of universities worldwide that appeared last week, TU/e was in 177th spot.
In the ranking per subject published today the performance of universities in particular subjects within eight fields is more evident:
• Clinical, Pre-Clinical & Health
• Arts & Humanities
• Life Sciences
• Social Sciences
• Business and economics
• Engineering & Technology
• Computer Science
• Physical Sciences
The compilers of the ranking cite how striking it is that in reality there are fourteen universities that dominate the list. The top five in each discipline are made up of pretty much the same names: Stanford University, Yale University, University of Chicago, Harvard University, Princeton University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of California, Berkeley (all USA) and the University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, Imperial College London, University College London in Great Britain. The only ‘blemish’ spoiling total domination by American and British universities is ETH Zurich – Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.
Asian universities are emerging as a strong force. Peking University is 35th in Social Sciences and Tsinghua 34th in Physical Sciences
The total score per discipline is, in its turn, based on five criteria: Teaching, International Outlook, Industry Income, Research and (Academic) Citations.
