Vertoro will further develop oil production from lignin
The NWO Domain Applied and Engineering Sciences has granted Emiel Hensen with a Take-off proposal grant for Vertoro. This start-up valorizes the catalytic process for lignin depolymerization, as developed by Emiel Hensen and his team at the Eindhoven University of Technology.
Vertoro, a spin-off from the InSciTe consortium (DSM, TU/e, UM, Brightlands Chemelot), will scale up this chemical process developed at the TU/e based on lignin, now a waste stream of bioethanol and paper mills, and produce a so-called crude lignin oil (CLO). This oil then serves, just like fossil crude oil, as a platform for resins, chemicals and fuels. At the start of 2019, a pilot plant will be ready at Brightlands Chemelot Campus in Geleen. In the meantime, it is important to further optimize the process, to further develop the business case, and to evaluate the CLO product together with third parties.
Take-off focuses on facilitating and encouraging commercial and entrepreneurial activities initiated at Dutch universities and the research institutes recognized by NWO. It concerns the creation of innovative new commercial activities that emerge from knowledge development and utilization by academic entrepreneurs.
