RESEARCH PROFILE
Jan Bergmans is Full Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering. With around 35 years of experience in the theory and applications of signal processing, Bergmans leads the Signal Processing Systems group which focuses on signal processing and data analytics theories, algorithms, architectures and systems for application areas such as healthcare, wireless communication, surveillance and intelligent lighting.
His research focuses on signal analysis techniques that are powerful yet computationally efficient. This often involves development and exploitation of mathematical models that incorporate knowledge of the application domain, such as propagation models of a radio communication channel or pathophysiological models in a clinical decision support system.
Bergmans is one of the founders and managers of the Eindhoven MedTech Innovation Center (e/MTIC), a large-scale research collaboration between TU/e, Philips Research and the 3 semi-academic hospitals in the Eindhoven region.
He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, has published numerous papers and 2 books, and holds around 40 US patents.

ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Jan Bergmans holds an MSc (1981) and PhD (1987) in Electrical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). From 1981 to 1982, Bergmans was a manager for communication projects in the Royal Netherlands Navy. He worked at Philips Research Laboratories from 1982 to 1999. In 1988 and 1989, he was exchange researcher in the digital video recording group of Hitachi Central Research Laboratories, Japan. From 1991 to 1999, Bergmans co-led an R&D team at Philips Research, developing signal processing techniques and integrated circuits for data storage systems. In 1999, he was appointed Full Professor at TU/e and chair of the Signal Processing Systems group. In 2000, Bergmans became scientific advisor to Philips Research Laboratories. Since 2006 he co-manages BrainBridge, the strategic collaboration between TU/e, Philips Research, and Zhejiang University (China).
