Chip- and capillary-based microreactors offer an attractive alternative for the continuous synthesis of high-valued products, however, the ability to deposit a coating within the circular microchannels remains a challenge. This method prescribes a coating technique for the hydrothermal synthesis of zeolites within the microchannels. ZSM-5 coatings were prepared by variation of substrate pretreatment and synthesis conditions to form coatings with specific zeolite crystal size, orientation, morphology and coating thickness. The catalytic activity of a bifunctional Pd/ZSM-5 coating was investigated for the conversion of acetone to methylisobutylketone in the microreactor.
