Abstract

 

Improvement of the efficacy of high-intensity discharge lamps and, for instance, the development of

Mercury free discharges require a good understanding of the power balance and loss factors involved.

Comprehensive measurements from the ultraviolet until the deep infra red are mandatory in order to

separate the role of different lamp components. They are normally not possible in a development

environment. The objective is therefore to develop a simple, quick method with standard

measurement techniques. Using Mercury free lamps as example, a method is derived to extract the

respective loss factors and contributions from wall temperature measurements in the middle of the

discharge vessel and visible power measurements.
