This course focuses on nutrition and exercise, after the cancer diagnosis. The course is offered by alliance TU/e, WUR, UU, UMC Utrecht. We have joined forces. Together we have translated the latest insights from research into nutrition and exercise for patients with cancer into a blended course (online/self-study + live day) for the healthcare provider. With the latest research results and knowledge, medical and lifestyle advice to the cancer patient can be optimized so they can experience the best possible quality of life, during and after cancer treatment.

The course offers the latest insights:

  • From scientific research and (if possible) experience of applying them in patient treatment by the EWUU partners
  • That are not yet widely known to the medical public (relatively new & insightful or previously unknown)
  • Which can be translated as much as possible into patient protocols/guidelines

What will you learn in this blended course?

  • You learn about the latest scientific knowledge on nutrition and exercise and their impact on cancer and the cancer patient
  • You learn how to turn this knowledge into practical solutions that have a positive effect on the patient's lifestyle
  • You will learn how to easily transfer the acquired knowledge
  • You learn how to motivate and monitor and learn to take into account the patient's knowledge, attitude and behavior regarding nutrition and exercise
  • You share your own knowledge and experience with peers and learn from each other

Program and topics

The course is blended in design; a mix of online and face-to-face learning activities. The learning material is compiled by lecturers from UU, UMC Utrecht, WUR and TU/e and is taught by experienced lecturers such as Prof. Aarnout Brombacher (TU/E), Prof. Anne May (UMCU) and Prof. Ellen Kampman (WUR).

The course consists of online learning materials that you will go through at your own pace (8 hours self-study on average) to prepare for a live meeting that will take place on May 11, 2023. The online platform opens on April 17 and is a self-study component without joint online meetings. This platform contains knowledge clips and articles. By reading these and answering the corresponding questions, you reflect on the daily practice of the healthcare professional with the cancer patient.

In the physical meeting on the campus of Wageningen University & Research, you will make a connection between science and everyday healthcare practice. To do this, you can choose from one of three workshops: nutrition, exercise and behavior (each workshop lasts 1.5 hours and is given once). The workshops are provided with the cooperation of Anouk Hiensch post-DOC at UMCU, Linda van der Worp, physiotherapist and Eva Valgaeren, dietician. Linda and Eva work at Hospital Gelderse Vallei in Ede.

The program of the physical meeting on May 11 is as follows (changes reserved):

9h00 – 9h25:      Welcome with coffee and tea
9h30:                  Introduction by Martine van der Mast and Astrid Kühlkamp
