PhD options

There are different options for doing a PhD in Eindhoven. Most PhD candidates will be hired by Eindhoven University of Technology. Other options are to look for funding in your own country or apply for private scholarships.

Employed

Employed PhD’s are appointed for a maximum of 4 years in a full-time appointment. Some spend part of their time teaching.

PhD openings can be found under vacancies.

Without being employed

TU/e offers opportunities for applicants who are not hired to do a PhD. In exceptional cases highly talented and motivated applicants gain admission to a PhD program. In this case a well-founded research idea that matches TU/e’s scientific ambitions and that meets the PhD programs conditions needs to be submitted. If you are not hired by Eindhoven University of Technology, you can do a PhD:

  • On a scholarship, for example from your government (such as a CSC scholarship), an international organization or a Dutch fund for foreign PhD candidates
  • As an employee of another employer, such as an industrial company

PhD candidates that are not hired by TU/e, are required to pay an annual bench fee (similar to tuition) of € 10,000. This bench fee covers the costs for education and supervision. PhD candidates funded by the Chinese Scholarship Council (only) are exempted from this bench fee.

Supervisor

You will need to find a supervisor yourself or, depending on the type of research, TU/e assigns a supervisor to you. Once you have found a supervisor, you will develop and agree a plan of work.
