Theo Salet, de in betonconstructies gespecialiseerde hoogleraar van Bouwkunde-afdeling Structural Design. De lezing duurt tot 20.00 uur. Lezing '3D Concrete Printing – A journey with destination unknown' door Prof. dr. ir. Theo Salet

Our built environment is facing major challenges for the decades ahead. Cities need to adapt faster than ever due to an urban migration, changing economies, smart mobility and a global energy transition. The construction industry is searching for ground breaking innovations to meet the demands in both a sustainable and affordable manner. Virtual design, prototyping and digital construction poise to become such a game changing technology. 

Designs no longer will be printed on paper and studied in harsh environmental conditions by labor force but physically realized in 3D by robots, simplifying the value chain and creating a less labor intensive and healthier work environment. It also paves the road for new materials and embedment of sensors for reasons of domotics, safety or structural health monitoring and will connect eventually even concrete to the IoT. No doubts this will change the nature of the profession of designers, engineers and contractors. 3D concrete printers democratize the manufacturing process and design skills and workmanship will become supported or even replaced by data driven algorithms to reduce on failure and optimize designs towards costs. The innovative technology promises affordable houses and civil structures for our society with a level of mass customization beyond the idea of the Ikea home planner. Digital manufacturing of concrete will disrupt not only the construction industry, but also change the way we design and eventually shape our built environment. 

Speaker’s biography 

Theo Salet is a full Professor in the Department of the Build Environment, Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) and visiting Professor at the Singapore Centre of 3D Printing (SC3DP) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU). He combines this positions with a partnership at the consulting engineering firm Witteveen+Bos. During his professional carrier, he worked on the design of underground buildings and large scale prefabricated tunnels and bridges like the North South metro line in Amsterdam, the Oresund link between Denmark and Sweden and the Confederation bridge in Canada. He is a member of the board of the Dutch Concrete Association, a member of the steering committee of the “Betonakkoord” aiming to realise a sustainable concrete industry in The Netherlands and the chairman of Stufib, the Dutch Association of Structural Engineers in Concrete Structures. His main topic of research is 3D printing of concrete structures, including innovative design strategies, experimental research and numerical modelling. He studied structural engineering and obtained his Doctorate of Philosophy from Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands.
