'Nanostructured surfaces for solid state lighting and strong light‐matter coupling'

Eindhoven University of Technology and Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research Surfaces containing precisely positioned resonant structures enable the control of electromagnetic waves over extended areas. In this presentation, Gómez Rivas will discuss nanostructured surfaces that areresonant at optical frequencies.

These structures are formed by lattices of metallic nanoparticlessupporting localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPPs), i.e., the resonant oscillation of the electronsin the nanoparticles. The coupling of LSPPs across the lattice enables the controlled light absorptionand emission by and from luminescent materials in the proximity of the lattice. These propertiesrenders these structures as the optical analogue of radio antenna phased arrays and make them relevant for applications in solid‐state lighting, optical communication, sensing and light harvesting.


Jaime Gómez Rivas received his PhD in 2002 at the Universiteit van Amsterdam for his work on light transport in disordered media. From 2002 until 2005, Gómez Rivas worked as postdoctoral researcher at the RWTH technical University of Aachen (Germany) on THz spectroscopy and plasmonics. In 2005 he became project leader at the FOM Institute for Atomic and Molecular Physics (AMOLF), leading the group Surface Photonics. This group was partially located at Philips Research in Eindhoven in order to bring blue sky research into applications. Gómez Rivas group has pioneered the work of plasmonics for solid state lighting. In 2010 Gómez Rivas became part-time professor at TU/e and group leader at AMOLF. After 10 years of fruitful collaboration with Philips, the group of Gomez Rivas moved in 2015 to the TU/e and to the Dutch Institute for Fundamental Energy Research (DIFFER), where it works on strong light-matter coupling and the potential applications of this phenomenon. Gómez Rivas has received several prestigious grants and awards, e.g., ERC starting and Proof of Concept grants, NWO-VICI, FOM-IPP and Facebook Academy Award.
