No experience but a lot of courage. That's what rector Frank Baaijens and others have when they will conduct the student symphony orchestra.

Maestro is the first lustrum concert that will be performed this academic year by student symphony orchestra Ensuite from ESMG Quadrivium. The name ‘Maestro’ comes from the similarly named television show in which inexperienced conductors are judged on their conductor skills. ‘Maestro’ mean ‘master’ in Italian and is a general term for an extraordinary musician.

The ‘maestro’s’ will be:
• Rector magnificus Frank Baaijens
• Councilor of Culture and Design Monique List
• Cursor editor Norbine Schalij
• Master student innovation science, Evelien Nieuwenburg

On Sunday the 8th of December, the four guests with little conducting experience will conduct Ensuite. They each received four coaching sessions from Bart Partouns, Ensuite’s own conductor. During the rehearsals, footage will be shot so the audience can see and hear the progress they made.

A judge of three persons, amongst whom conductor Jules van Hessen, will judge the guests and eventually award one of them a prize.
The maestro’s will conduct well-known and popular classical pieces that they probably already know themselves. This allows them to spot small mistakes more easily.

During Maestro, Ensuite’s own conductor will conduct two pieces as well. The most remarkable among the two is a piece commissioned by KoepelOrgaan Nederlandse Studentenorkesten (KONSO). This piece is in strong contrast with the other pieces, because it is modern and utilizes many different harmonies.

Repertoire
The four Maestro’s will conduct the following pieces:
• Carmen Suite No.1 (several parts), Bizet
• Farandole from Suite l’Arlesienne no.2 Bizet
• Hungarian Dans No.5 and 6, Brahms
• Peer Gynt Suite (Grieg), deel 4 Tanz in der Halle des Bergkonigs.
• Dance of the Knights, Prokofiev

The two pieces conduct by Ensuite’s own conductor are the Rosamunde overture and the commissioned KONSO piece: ‘In de Blauwe Nacht’. This piece is especially composed for Dutch student orchestras.

Presentation is in Dutch.
